Ask three Indian app agencies what a simple app costs, and you'll get three very different numbers. One price list says ₹50,000–1.5 lakh. Another says ₹2–4 lakh. A third says ₹8–29 lakh, and adds that the lower figures you see elsewhere "usually mean a freelancer working alone".
All three were published in 2026.
That's a sixteen-fold spread for the same kind of app. If you're about to spend lakhs, that spread is the thing to understand.
Almost every article about app development cost in India is written by an agency that wants to build your app. This one is written from your side of the table. It covers what apps actually cost, why quotes differ so much, the costs that start after launch, and how to spend less without ending up with something you have to rebuild.
App development cost in India: the 2026 price bands
Here's how three Indian agencies price the same three tiers, from their own published price lists:
| App type | Groot Technologies | Innovatrix (iOS) | Ahex | Typical timeline |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Simple Basic UI, limited features | ₹50,000–1.5 lakh | ₹2–4 lakh | ₹8–29 lakh (MVP) | 6–8 weeks |
| Moderate Login, APIs, admin panel, payments | ₹1.5–4 lakh | ₹4–8 lakh | ₹33–75 lakh | 3–4 months |
| Complex Real-time, AI, multi-sided | ₹4–10 lakh+ | ₹8–20 lakh | ₹83 lakh–2.5 crore+ | 4–6 months+ |
Sources: Groot Technologies (March 2026), Innovatrix (updated October 2026, including timelines), Ahex (October 2026).
None of these is wrong. They describe different teams, processes and definitions of "simple". The lowest band usually means a small team or a freelancer with light testing and little support after launch. The highest means a full agency team with dedicated design, QA and project management, priced closer to international rates.
The question isn't which number is right. It's which one matches what you need, and whether your quote says so.
What drives app development cost in India
01Features and the backend
The visible screens are often the cheaper part. The backend is where the cost goes: user accounts, the database, the admin panel your team uses, notifications and the logic connecting it all. A "simple" app with a serious admin panel isn't simple.
02Platforms: Android, iOS or both
Building separate native apps for Android and iOS roughly doubles the front-end work. Cross-platform frameworks such as Flutter and React Native share one codebase across both. For most business apps in India, one agency estimates cross-platform cuts the initial build cost by 25–40% (Riolabz). If your customers are mostly on Android, starting there alone is often sensible.
03Design
Using standard components is fast and cheap. Custom design, animations and a strong brand feel take more time. Both can be right. Know which one you're paying for.
04Integrations
Payments, maps, SMS or OTP, WhatsApp, CRMs and ERPs each add build time, and many also add a monthly bill once the app is live.
05Who builds it, and where
A freelancer, a small studio and a large agency differ in seniority, process and overheads. Ask who will actually work on your app and how senior they are. A lower rate with three times the hours isn't cheaper.
06Testing and compliance
Testing on real devices, security checks and meeting Apple's and Google's store rules all take time. Skipping them doesn't remove the cost. It moves it to after launch, when fixing things is more expensive.

App maintenance and other costs after launch
A first quote usually covers the build. These costs start the day the app goes live:
| Cost | Typical amount | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Maintenance and updates | 15–20% of the build cost a year | OS updates, bug fixes, security patches (Ecarter) |
| Apple Developer Program | US$99 a year | Required to publish on the App Store (Apple) |
| Google Play developer account | US$25 one-time | Required to publish on Google Play (Google) |
| Cloud hosting | Varies with usage | Servers, database, storage, backups |
| Third-party services | Varies with usage | SMS/OTP, maps, WhatsApp, payment gateway fees |
Cloud costs are where I see the most waste. When I audited RightLife's health app, its servers had been set up for large-scale traffic before it had a single user. Restructuring the setup to grow with actual usage cut monthly server costs by about 66%.
The same audit found something more expensive. Nobody had checked the app against Apple's and Google's approval rules for health apps. Facial scanning, data storage and in-app payments all had to be reworked, and left alone that would have blocked the launch. Read how we shipped RightLife after four missed launch dates.
Spend less without cutting corners: start with an MVP
The biggest saving in app development cost doesn't come from negotiating the hourly rate. It comes from not building what you don't need yet.
A minimum viable product (MVP) is the smallest version of your app that solves the core problem for real users. Everything else waits until you've seen how people use it.
For Stetho, a new healthcare education institute, I scoped a focused MVP for its first batch of students. It included protection for proprietary lecture content, because that mattered from day one, and left out features that could wait. Reset built it, and the app launched in three months. See how we scoped Stetho's MVP.
At RightLife, the team had about 80% of the features ready and was stuck on the remaining 20%. Cutting the launch back to what the MVP genuinely needed is what got it shipped.
Sometimes the cheapest app is the one you don't build.
At Reev Travels, the obvious move was to buy an off-the-shelf booking tool. In that case, building was right: the tools would have hit their limits within a year. For many other businesses, a configured off-the-shelf product beats a custom app. Here's how we made the build-or-buy call at Reev.
What a fair app development quote includes
Before you compare prices, make sure every quote covers the same things:
- A feature list: each screen and action, written so you'd recognise it, not "user module"
- Platforms: Android, iOS or both, and native or cross-platform
- Backend and admin panel: what your team can see and manage
- Design: standard components or custom, and the number of revision rounds
- Integrations: each one named, with any monthly fees noted
- Testing: which devices and OS versions, and who tests
- Store submission: who handles App Store and Play Store approval, including their policy rules
- Ownership: the code repository, cloud account and both store accounts in your company's name
- Warranty: how long bugs are fixed free after launch
- Maintenance: priced as a separate yearly line
- Milestones: payment tied to working, demonstrable parts of the app
- Handover: documentation, credentials and deployment steps if you change vendors
Ownership is the one owners skip, and regret. Here's who owns the code when an agency builds your app, and the accounts that must be in your name.
Red flags in an app quote
- A single price with no feature list
- "Simple app" with no definition of what's included
- The store accounts or cloud hosting set up in the agency's name
- No mention of the admin panel or backend, as if the app runs on its own
- No testing or store approval in the scope
- Most of the payment upfront, before anything works
- No maintenance price, so you only find out after launch
If your quotes are too far apart to compare, the problem is usually the scope, not the agencies. Defining the product first, with a feature list, platforms and an honest budget, makes every quote comparable. That's what a fractional CTO does before a build starts. Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to make an app in India?
Published 2026 ranges run from about ₹50,000 for a very simple app to ₹50 lakh or more for a complex platform. Apps with accounts, payments and an admin panel are priced anywhere from about ₹1.5 lakh to ₹75 lakh, depending on who builds them and how they work.
Can I build an app for under ₹1 lakh?
For a very simple app with a few screens and little or no backend, some agencies say yes. Expect a small team, light testing and limited support. For anything with payments, user accounts and an admin panel, budget more.
Is Android or iOS app development cheaper in India?
The build cost is similar per platform. Building both natively costs close to double. A cross-platform framework like Flutter or React Native covers both from one codebase, and can cut the initial cost by about 25–40%.
How much does an app cost to run each month?
Plan for maintenance at about 15–20% of the build cost a year, plus cloud hosting and third-party services (SMS, maps, payments), which grow with usage. Apple charges US$99 a year to stay on the App Store. Google charges US$25 once.
How long does it take to build an app?
A simple app can take 6–8 weeks, a moderate one 3–4 months and a complex one 4–6 months or more. A focused MVP is often the fastest way to get something real into users' hands.
Should the app store accounts be in my name?
Yes. Your Apple Developer and Google Play accounts, the code repository and the cloud account should all belong to your company, with the agency given access. Moving an app between store accounts later is slow, and sometimes not possible.
